The departure of OpenAI technical staff member Hieu Pham has raised many questions.
OpenAI Technical Staff Hieu Pham: Is the field of artificial intelligence so exhausting and painful inside? This question has been raised by the departure of OpenAI technical staff member Hieu Pham. He expressed his feelings in a social media post, writing, "I'm so tired, I'll find a cure for my illnesses." He will be taking his family to his home country, Vietnam. I hope I'll be fine. In his post, Hieu Pham discussed mental health, writing that he used to joke about it before.
Hieu Pham worked at XAI before founding OpenAI. XAI is Elon Musk's AI company, whose GrokAI is used worldwide. Hieu Pham's departure has raised many questions. One user, Mark, wrote, "You worked with the best people in the world, and yet you decided to leave? Something doesn't seem right."
Another user, Rachel Ramsey, wrote, "On LinkedIn, people are already predicting that 2026 will be a year of mental and physical exhaustion for developers due to the rapid pace of AI. Balance is crucial in life."
Wes Winder wrote on X: "Using AI is generally both physically and physically exhausting." I can't even imagine what it's like working inside.
Another user, Atanu, wrote, "This is the other side of AI development that no one talks about. Building systems to improve human life and sacrificing your life to do so is a huge challenge. Be sure to spend time at home with your family."
What Hieu Pham said about leaving OpenAI: "I've made the difficult decision to leave @OpenAI. Working here after @xai was the best opportunity of my life. I've met the best people. In these companies, I've helped create highly intelligent entities that will improve our lives. This work makes me proud. But this hard work has come at a price. I can't believe I'm saying this. I'm exhausted. The decline in my mental health, which I used to joke about, is real. I'm taking a break from Frontier AI Labs. I'll be moving my family to my home country, Vietnam." I'll try something new there and find a cure for my illnesses. I hope I'll get well.
