Hidden setting in Android phones, which can be turned off to extend battery life
If your Android phone is draining battery quickly even when you are not using it, the reason may be a setting. Android phones have a feature called Mobile data always active, which keeps mobile data active in the background even when you are connected to Wi-Fi.
This feature is turned on by default on the phone. Its main purpose is to make it easier to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. For example, if you leave your home Wi-Fi or the Wi-Fi signal suddenly becomes weak, this setting will immediately switch the phone to mobile data and you will not feel disconnected from the internet. This is exactly like keeping an app open in the background, so that it opens immediately when needed.
Although this feature may sound useful, it increases battery consumption. The phone requires more energy to use mobile data than Wi-Fi.
In one test, it was found that mobile data consumed 16 percent of the phone's battery even when using Wi-Fi for 10 hours a day and being out of the house for only 20 minutes. In such a situation, this setting becomes a means of unnecessary battery consumption for users who stay on a strong WiFi signal all day.
How to turn off this setting?
This setting is not hidden in the general menu but in the Developer Options. To turn it off, first go to the phone's settings and click on About Phone.
Tap the Build Number or Software Version there seven times in a row. Then, after asking for your phone's PIN or password, 'Developer Options' will start.
Now, go to the System or System Management menu in Settings again and enter Developer Options.
There, go to the 'Networking' section and turn off the button called Mobile Data Always Active.
If you make a lot of phone calls and rely on the WiFi calling feature, there is a possibility that the call will be disconnected or interrupted when the WiFi signal is weak. Also, switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data may take a few seconds longer than before.
However, this delay is not noticeable on modern phones. Small technical improvements can help increase smartphone battery life and improve the user experience.
