Apple hikes MacBook and iPad prices worldwide after memory chip price hike
Apple has hiked the prices of MacBook and iPads worldwide. The price of memory and storage chips has skyrocketed as the artificial intelligence (AI) industry accelerates data center expansion. Apple on Thursday raised the prices of iPad and MacBook, saying it could not protect customers from the impact.
The price hike will not affect Apple's most profitable product, the iPhone. But Apple's low-cost laptop 'Neo', which was launched as a competitor to Windows and Chromebook laptops, has become more expensive within a few months of its release. Apple has increased the initial price of the Neo from 599 US dollars to 699 US dollars.
The price of memory chips, which has been rising due to the rapid expansion of the AI industry, is also weakening the prospects of smartphone and PC sales. Memory chip manufacturers such as Micron have prioritized orders from AI chip makers including Nvidia in the past few months. Despite their record profits, the supply of memory chips for electronics manufacturers has decreased. As a result, companies including Apple have been forced to increase the prices of their products.
Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that it was inevitable to increase the prices of Apple products due to the increase in memory chip prices. A week later, Apple increased the prices of iPads and MacBooks. Apple said in a statement, "We have never seen the price of any component increase so much in such a short period of time. Until now, we have been protecting customers from this impact. But now we have reached a point where we need to increase the prices of some products, including iPads and Macs."
According to the updated price list on Apple's website, the price of the MacBook Air with 512 GB storage has been increased from US$ 1,099 to US$ 1,299. Similarly, the price of the MacBook Pro with 1 terabyte of storage has been increased from US$ 1,699 to US$ 1,999.
Similarly, the starting price of the iPad Air with 128 GB of storage has been increased from $599 to $749. The company has also increased the prices of some other models. The price of the iPad Air with 256 GB of storage has also increased from $999 to $1,199.
