Is Android's autocorrect ruining your mobile typing? Here's a smart way to fix it
If you feel like Android's autocorrect isn't that great, you should know that you're suffering without even realizing it. You may not know it, but Gboard has a feature called Personal Dictionary, and using this feature, you can make your typing experience much better than before.
It's possible to customize your Personal Dictionary to suit the way you use your phone. This includes adding new words that Google doesn't know, correcting incorrect autocorrects to prevent them from happening in the future, or creating your own custom text shortcuts to make typing things like emails and phone numbers easier.
Here, we'll show you how to open Personal Dictionary on Android phones and customize the inputs there to make your work easier.
- First, go to Gboard's settings. For this, open Gboard in any app and tap on the four-dot menu icon at the top left of the phone and tap on Settings.
- Now tap on Dictionary and then Personal dictionary and select the language of your choice. Here we have selected Nepali (Nepal).
- After doing this, you can add your words. To add a new word, you need to tap on the + icon at the top right, and type your word in the top row. If you want to add a shortcut, you can put it in the bottom row. Here we have added our official website, and put a 'T' shortcut so that you don't have to type it repeatedly.
After entering everything correctly, tap on the Back button to return to the previous page.
- Add your new words in this way and test your new words by going to any app where you need to type. It will not add your custom words directly, but rather those words will appear in the autocorrect box at the top of Gboard.
- You can also export your dictionary. Otherwise, if you ever delete Gboard or clear the cache, you will lose access to your custom keyboard. So it is wise to keep a backup of it.
To do this, tap on the icon with three dots in the top right, and select Export. You will be asked which default option to choose, here we have chosen Google Drive. Once you have done this, follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
- If you ever need to import your dictionary into Gboard again, you can import that backup very easily. To do this, tap on the icon with three dots and select Import. Then you will have to find the correct file and tap on it.
In the meantime, if Gboard cannot find the correct file on Google Drive, you can also download the backup directly to your phone.
Now you have your own personal dictionary full of words and shortcuts that Google and its keyboard do not know.
This means that the next time you try to type any new words or phrases you've learned, AutoCorrect won't automatically change them to words that are completely different and incomprehensible from the context of your sentence.
