What is Android System Intelligence and why is it on your phone?
If you use an Android smartphone, you may have seen a name in your phone’s app list – Android System Intelligence. This name may sound vague and strange to many, but in fact, it is the main backbone of making your phone smart.
This is not a new app, but the new name for Device Personalization Services that came with Android 9 in 2018. It is a system within Google’s Private Compute Core, whose main job is to provide intelligence and smart features on the phone while keeping user data private.
Android System Intelligence sits behind the scenes and operates many important features. For example, automatically showing subtitles in videos and instantly translating conversations, recognizing how you are holding the phone or looking at the screen, informing you on the lock screen about what song is playing around you, adding 'action buttons' such as viewing the location in messages or notifications or saving contacts, etc.
In Android 15 and 16, it identifies OTP codes from banks and prevents unsafe apps from reading such codes, and hides sensitive information on the lock screen. Although some features of Android system intelligence are limited to Google Pixel phones, it has played a big role in making the overall Android experience smooth and secure.
This app may scare users because it asks for many permissions. However, its specialty is that it does not have direct access to the internet.
It uses a secure bridge called 'Private Compute Services' to get the updates required for machine learning. This means that your personal data does not go outside the phone.
Many users want to remove it to reduce storage or battery consumption. However, it is not advisable to remove or disable it. If you turn it off, all the smart features mentioned above will stop working.
It cannot be uninstalled like a normal app; this requires root or special commands. Which can be risky for the health of the phone.
If you want to control your data, you can go to your phone's settings and turn off Usage & Diagnostics or delete the data it collects with Clear Data.
