Apple Introduces New ‘MacBook Pro’ with Touch Display; Starting Price Exceeds 4 Lakh Rupees
Apple has unveiled a ‘MacBook Pro’ featuring a touch display for the first time. At an event held on Wednesday, the company introduced the laptop in 14-inch and 16-inch models, equipped with a ‘Pro-LED XDR’ screen and an illuminated logo on the back.
According to the company, the starting price for the new MacBook Pro is set at 2,899 US dollars (approximately over 440,000 Nepali rupees) for the 14-inch model, and 3,399 US dollars (approximately 516,000 Nepali rupees) for the 16-inch model. Pre-orders opened on Wednesday, and the devices are expected to be available in the market starting November 6. The company stated that it will sell this new model alongside existing Mini-LED versions and other 14-inch models.
Display and Touch Technology
Apple claims that the display on this device is the best among all professional laptops globally. Utilizing Tandem OLED technology, a specialized display engine algorithm, and factory calibration, the screen offers a peak HDR and SDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits, along with a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1. The company explains that the display engine controls the color and brightness of each individual pixel based on environmental conditions, temperature, and pixel power consumption.
The screen features a ‘ProMotion’ refresh rate that ranges from 10 Hz to 120 Hz and includes an anti-reflective coating to minimize light reflection. Customers can also opt for a nano-texture display, depending on their needs.
The company states that because the touch sensors are integrated directly into the display panel, users can operate the device without any lag. Users can utilize various gestures, such as swiping to scroll through webpages, pinching to zoom in on photos, dragging and dropping presentation slides, and double-tapping a window to switch it to full-screen mode.
A new hinge design has been implemented to keep the screen stable during touch interaction, while video stabilization technology ensures the camera remains steady during video calls. Since macOS automatically interprets touch inputs as "clicks," existing apps can be used immediately.
Design and External Structure
This laptop is 1 millimeter thinner than its predecessor; the 14-inch model weighs approximately 1.36 kg, while the 16-inch model weighs about 1.81 kg.
The previous "notch" has been removed and replaced with a "Dynamic Island"—similar to the one found on newer iPhone models—which houses features like Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI. Thanks to reduced screen bezels, the display size has increased to 14.2 inches for the 14-inch model and 16.3 inches for the 16-inch model.
Hardware and Connectivity
The new MacBook Pro is powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which were unveiled last March. However, the company has stated that the device's 'thermal architecture' has been redesigned to prevent hot air from reaching the display.
The device will be available with up to 128 GB of unified memory and up to 16 TB of storage capacity.
For connectivity, it includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe, and a headphone jack. The laptop supports up to four external monitors simultaneously and features Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 connectivity. According to the company, its fast-charging technology allows the battery to be charged up to 50 percent in 30 minutes.
