What is a PDF reader, and do you really need a separate, dedicated app for it?
In our daily lives—whether for office tasks or personal matters—we frequently use PDF files. As smartphones have become the primary device for most people, it is only natural to want to be able to view these files easily whenever the need arises.
Given this, many might wonder whether they actually need a separate (dedicated) PDF reader on their phones. The term "PDF" stands for "Portable Document Format."
This file format was developed by Adobe in the 1990s to facilitate the easy sharing of documents across various hardware and software platforms. Currently, the management and standardization of the PDF format are overseen by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Since the format was designed with accessibility in mind, PDF files can typically be opened using software that comes pre-installed on most smartphones. Examples include the 'Preview' feature on iPhones, or 'Google Drive' on Pixel and Galaxy devices. A dedicated PDF reader is simply a specialized program that offers additional features beyond just opening and viewing files.
When and why might you need a PDF reader on your phone?
As mentioned above, you do not need to download a separate PDF reader if your only goal is to open a PDF file. If your only activity involves reading items like restaurant menus, gym class schedules, or routine office documents, you do not need a separate or specialized program.
The primary reason to use a dedicated app or tool is that the software already present on your phone may not offer a comfortable reading experience. Most PDF readers include features that adjust the document size to fit a smartphone's small screen, making it easier to view.
Upgrading to a separate PDF reader can be particularly beneficial if you have vision issues, experience headaches when reading on a screen, or simply dislike the default option provided on your phone.
Another key reason to use a dedicated PDF reader is the need to perform tasks beyond just reading. For users who frequently interact with PDF documents—such as filling out forms or adding digital signatures—these specialized applications are highly convenient.
PDF readers are also very useful when you need to add notes to a document or highlight key information. Furthermore, premium or paid software often includes a variety of tools for editing existing PDFs or creating new ones.
Therefore, if your personal or professional tasks require these features, you might consider setting a separate PDF reader as your default app. Doing so can help you save time.
However, security should not be overlooked in this process. Both PDF files and PDF readers can easily become targets for hackers. Therefore, as with any other app or file type, ensure that the source is reliable before downloading software or opening a document.
Provided that you do not open files containing malware, using PDF readers created by reputable developers is considered safe. By exercising a little caution, you can avoid unnecessary security risks that might otherwise accompany accessing PDF files.
