Apple Introduces Selfie-Based Age Verification for Accessing 18+ Rated Apps
Apple has introduced a new feature that allows iPhone and iPad users to verify that they are adults by taking a selfie. This age-verification feature has been added as part of the new iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 updates. However, it is not available in all countries or regions. In supported areas, this feature enables users to confirm they are adults without needing to provide a credit card or a government-issued identification document.
According to Apple, the feature analyzes the user's face to estimate whether or not they are an adult. To complete this, users must follow on-screen instructions to move their head—turning it from side to side and tilting it up and down—ensuring their face is captured from four different directions.
Apple states that the age-verification process combines on-device processing with analysis performed via "Private Cloud Compute." The results from both processes are integrated directly on the device. The company asserts that neither Apple nor any third party has access to the user's facial images. Once age verification is successfully completed, the selfie is automatically deleted.
In certain scenarios—such as when using an Apple Account, downloading an app with age restrictions, or accessing specific websites—users may be prompted to verify that they are adults. However, the availability of this feature varies by location. The specific circumstances under which a user must verify their age are determined by the regulations and requirements of the respective country or region. According to Apple, age verification may be required when setting up a new Apple Account, installing software updates, using apps intended for adults over the age of 18, or modifying security-related settings.
The company has stated that once a user has successfully verified that they are an adult, there will be no need to confirm their age again.
As various countries have begun to tighten regulations regarding children's online safety and access to age-appropriate content, technology companies have started implementing methods to verify user age. Such measures are considered necessary, particularly to prevent minors from accessing content intended for individuals over the age of 18.
Since legal requirements regarding age verification vary by country, Apple has introduced this option for users in specific regions. This is expected to simplify the age verification process and reduce the need for users to provide personal documentation, such as government-issued identification or credit card details.
