1. Using data saver mode
Most Android phones these days have a data saver mode, which works by blocking services that consume a lot of data to save data. This mode turns off background data for specially installed apps and disables the ability to turn on Personal Hotspot.
To turn on data saver mode on your Android phone, go to Settings > Data Usage > Mobile Networks. Now scroll down and tap on 'Data Saving' or 'Data Saver' and turn it on.
If you need to turn off the data saving mode in the future, you can turn off the data saving toggle here. If you have an app on your mobile, for which you want this mode not to restrict data, then you can set such an app as an exception.
For this, click on 'Unrestricted Apps' or 'Unrestricted data' under 'Data Saving' and turn on the toggle button next to the desired app.
2. Use the lite version of your favorite apps
Lite versions of many Android apps are also available on the Google Play Store. Which is a simplified version of the standard version, which gives you the option to save data while using your favorite platform.
For example, you can get separate lite versions for apps like Facebook, Spotify, TikTok.
3. Disable mobile data for certain apps
Some apps on your phone consume a lot of data. You can block such apps while using mobile data.
By doing this, these apps do not use your cellular data, they only connect to the Internet when you are on a Wi-Fi network. For this, go to Network Access or Data Management under Data Usage via Mobile Network from your Android phone settings and tap on any app in the list.
From there, you can decide whether to make it work only on Wi-Fi or make it work on mobile data as well.
4. Turn off auto download of media for apps
Many apps like WhatsApp automatically download media files from chats even when mobile data is being used. In fact you can make your apps not download such media files while on cellular mobile data.
In WhatsApp, for this, press the 3-dot button in the upper right corner of the app and enter the settings. Now go to Storage & Data and go to the media auto-download section and click on 'When Using Mobile Data'.
Untick all options, so that the app will not download anything. Finally select 'OK'.
5. Play the video in low quality
Many video streaming apps are set to play in high quality by default. Which consumes a lot of your mobile.
You can reduce the video quality by going into these apps on your phone to reduce mobile data consumption. For example, go to YouTube and play a video.
Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the video and select 'Data Saver' under 'Quality'. Similarly, to manually set the video quality, go to 'Advanced' and choose one, for example 360p.
6. Turn off cloud backup on mobile data
If you use cloud storage apps like Google Drive, Dropbox, Google Photos, then you can turn off the backup option of these apps while using mobile data. Otherwise, these apps are regularly uploading data to the cloud from your phone's mobile data.
To prevent this, for example go to Google Drive and go to settings via the hamburger menu (three parallel bars) and select 'Transfer Files Only Over Wi-Fi'. To change this way in Google Photos, click on the profile picture in the app and select 'Mobile Data Usage' and 'No Data' by backing up through the Photos settings.
7. Run the map in offline mode
If you use an app like Google Maps for navigation, download a map of the area before you go to prevent such apps from using mobile data. It gives you the opportunity to navigate to your chosen area without using mobile data.
For this, open Google Maps when you are on a Wi-Fi network. Navigate to the area you want to download in the app and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner of the app and select 'Offline Maps'.
Now select 'Select Your Own Map' on the offline map page, then the app will highlight the area you have navigated to. From here you can move around to the area you want. When you're ready, tap the 'Download' button below to download the map. After downloading the map, you can use it even offline.
